Fascinating Michigan poll
A new poll of likely Michigan voters has both Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders beating Donald Trump by 12 points, and Elizabeth Warren and every other first or second tier Democrat beating Trump there, too.
But Sanders is beating Trump among both men and women, while Biden beats Trump among women but loses to him among men. Sanders even beat Trump among men with just a high school degree. Trump smashed Hillary Clinton in the Midwest with incoherent rants about trade that touched on a genuine grievance there. He doesn’t know how to fix it, but he appropriately diagnosed the problem, and that won him a lot of support. He’ll be able to play that same card against Biden, but it doesn’t work with Sanders. Here’s the poll, per the Detroit News.
Biden, for such an “electable” candidate, keeps having rough campaign day. Today he clarified that he continues to support the Hyde Amendment, which bars public money from covering abortion services, and puts him nearly alone in the Democratic primary. I reported this afternoon that in 2011 and 2012 he was the leader of an internal effort to try to strip contraceptive coverage from millions of women. He said at the time he thought it was smart politics and would appeal to working class, male Catholic voters in swing states. Story here.
If you’re in Washington on Thursday, I’ll be doing a talk on my book, We’ve Got People, at Busboys & Poets at 6:30 pm, at 14th and V Sts. NW. (Details here, but that’s really all of the details.)
If you haven’t bought it yet, or checked it out of a library (or asked your library to stock it), please do! You can purchase it here.
Two new articles, one in New York Magazine, the other in Splinter, about We’ve Got People, highlighting two pieces of news in the book:
Chuck Schumer, after Christine Blasey Ford testified, thought Brett Kavanaugh was finished, and privately told Democrats on the committee to stand down, so they wouldn’t do anything to blow it.
Inside the committee, it was Sen. Kamala Harris who pressured top-ranking Democrat Dianne Feinstein to share Blasey Ford’s letter with other committee members.
The audio version of We’ve Got People will be out shortly, but not in time for the book’s release Tuesday. So if that’s how you want to consume (?) it, sign up here and Strong Arm Press will send you a note when it’s ready.
Good night!
