It is an astute observation. Of course the difference between Johnson and Manchin is that Johnson saw politics as his source of power and used it however best to enhance his own power, no other principle got in his way. Manchin sees coal/fossil fuels and big business as his source of power and politics as merely a tool to maintain that source of power. He is incapable of overcoming that self limited, grasping self-interested perspective. They are equally moral midgets, but at least in Johnson's case the U.S. benefited from the conundrum of power, whereas with Manchin it appears the corruption of power will not result in any fortunate historical turn, just deeper destruction of the Republic and the world.

Manchin is the coal-ill-ition politician. With a black heart he mines his wealthy patrons.

LBJ was a pragmatist. Joe Manchin is just a bully. Joe Biden took many pages from Bernie Sander's platform, a platform that expresses the values of many in this country. If Joe Manchin has any values that go beyond defending coal and preserving his own wealth, I'm hard pressed to discover them. Who would would be fooled if he got on board, claiming to be a team player? We'd all know that he's just a shallow opportunist. If we can't do better, we're in worse trouble than I thought.

i think i am a subscriber (please let me know if i'm not. First of all, i found the piece to be both insightful and thought out. i think the only QAP candidate that could beat him for the nomination would be Trump (his cult owns the party). Also, we will still be ushered the rest of the way into a dictatorship if Manchin is elected. The only two Dems i believe would have a chance to beat him would be Bernie or Elizabeth.

Johnson only reached the Presidency via JFK’s assassination. Manchin would need some similar horrific act of destiny to get there. I don’t see that happening. Don’t count Harris out though. Being VP slows everyone down at first.

I haven't read the article, but here's where you're wrong about Manchin for president: getting the nomination.

There's no way he gets the Democrats who he just defied 96% of the politicians of to say 'that's our guy'. And Republicans may love his disruption but he's not their presidential pick.

If he had a nomination, maybe he'd have a chance, but I don't see how he gets a nomination.

Lyndon Johnson was an entirely different kettle of fish. He actually had a conscience and was able to change his behavior. Although it’s true he was bought and sold by the radio industry that’s different than being bought and sold by coal. I believe your comment about Manchin riding the bomb into the ground is appropriate. Right now, he’s taking the whole country with him unfortunately. If we don’t pay us more benefits for the working class, we are sunk. Also, Biden is shooting himself in the foot because he could eliminate 95% of student debt with a stroke of the pin and would improve the economy and generate loyalty from all the folks who still owe. As it is he seems so grudging about the things he does to help people. Sorry a little off topic I just can’t stand it. Have a good holidays everyone we’re going to have lots of work to do in the new year .

Well at least the Republicans would win the presidency as there would be 2 of them running for the same office.

Ryan, the read was interesting, not weird. I, of course, always want to see Dems play hardball…with the balls aimed at Manchin’s spleen or any soft spot on his head. I’m from TX originally, and well I know of LBJ….and the filth of TX politics. Manchin, in his arrogance, blindness, corruption, overwhelming greed and lack of ethics and his pervasive selfishness for his equally selfish children makes TX look saintly.

And LBJ was not the usher of climate catastrophe and world threat that Manchin is.

We have already had the "it's all about me" president (Trump). We don't need another narcissistic cretin.

I think you should stop nightlining as Manchin's shrink. His greatest ambition seams to be being personally responsible for keeping a few million kids in poverty to prevent a few hundred parents from having some extra money to blow on drugs.

It was both dumb and weird. While he might find support for such a move as a Republican candidate, he has made it clear that he has no integrity. Usually constituents find that out after they’re in office. He’s also made it clear just who he is. We already have a feckless current president elected solely because he wasn’t the horrible incumbent and because he disingenuous adopted Sander’s platform to get elected. Things would never have gotten to where we are if Biden had whipped out a can of LBJ early on and fought for his supposed agenda. But he allowed Manchin and Sinema to whittle it down to almost nothing while simultaneously backing the BIF bill. Neither of these guys fit the LBJ mold.

Why would Manchin want that job? A lot more stress and fewer Sunday drives in the Lamborghini.
